Durable Forming Tool Solution for AME

Optimising Crimping Performance and Durability
3D model of a green geometric shape featuring two rectangular blocks connected by a central bridge. Each block has a circular hole, and the structure has zigzag edges. The background is white.

The Challenge

AME needed a forming tool for electrical terminal fittings that ensured both high-quality crimps and long-lasting durability. The tool needed to consistently deliver precise crimping while withstanding regular use. Initial prototypes made from high tensile steel provided satisfactory crimping but fell short in terms of long-term durability, prompting AME to seek a more robust solution.

Our Solution

B&S Precision Engineering collaborated with AME to develop new prototypes using hardened D2/K110 through-hardened and tempered steel, known for its exceptional hardness and wear resistance. These materials were specifically chosen to address the durability concerns while maintaining the high-quality crimping performance. Rigorous testing was conducted to assess the tool’s longevity and reliability under operational conditions.

The Outcome

Ongoing trials of the D2/K110 prototypes are showing significant improvements in durability while maintaining the desired crimping quality. B&S’s expertise in material selection and tool design played a key role in enhancing the tool’s performance, ensuring AME can rely on a forming tool that meets both their durability and operational requirements.
