Innovative Insert Solution for Orora

Extending Wheel Lifespan Through Collaboration
A 3D rendering of a mechanical component resembles a green circular wheel with eight symmetrical arms, each ending in a gray metallic bracket. The center features an orange disc with yellow nuts and a central cylindrical piece.

The Challenge

Orora faced recurring wear on the apertures of their aluminium can production line’s transfer wheel, requiring costly and inefficient full wheel replacements. Seeking a solution, they turned to B&S Precision Engineering to help extend the wheel’s lifespan and reduce overall maintenance costs.

Our Solution

B&S worked closely with Orora to develop a practical solution: replaceable inserts for each aperture. These inserts would absorb the wear, allowing for easy replacement without discarding the entire wheel. B&S created prototype inserts from several materials, including Nylon, Delrin and Erytalite and tested them through factory trials to determine the most effective option.

The Outcome

The trials provided valuable insights. Nylon inserts failed prematurely, while Delrin showed decent durability. However, the Erytalite inserts performed exceptionally, offering a 30% improvement in lifespan over Delrin. By adopting replaceable Erytalite inserts, Orora significantly reduced maintenance costs and extended the life of their transfer wheels, thanks to the solution developed in collaboration with B&S.
